Meerathang to Ice wall trek, practice and back to New Melling – Part 5

I suggest reading other parts before reading this.

The most exciting and strenuous part of our course start now. Early morning snow covered view of Gorichen was so energizing. Trek from Meerathang campsite to ice wall is exhausting, yet I was excited for snow wall climbing practice. Backpack was not heavy as we only carried equipment’s. I could enjoy the view in front me but altitude played the role well. You feel breathless as you keep gaining altitude. It feels like this trek never ends. You climb one big mountain, and you see another, then another.

Be careful while walking on Scree as they are loose slippery stone. Scree is bits of broken rock piled up at the base of a cliff. A scree slope will pile up to its steepest possible angle. Depending on the size and shape of the rock chunks, that angle may be shallow or steep. This might cause problem to people walking behind you.

You see a beautiful tarn on the way to Ice wall. This blue mountain lake emphasizes the beauty of surrounding lakes.

By the time I saw the first sight of wall, I was exhausted.  Yet, the puja for Barfani baba got me thrilled. First day was mostly practicing 10 point, 4-point, 3 point & 2-point climbing technique for different inclinations.  Once we got hang of that, we geared up and started climbing the slope with iceaxe.

TIP

Don’t exhaust your energy during trek. Walk at your own pace. You need to spend entire day in practice.

Coming down is equally slippery. Make sure you are safe post running down the slope. Safety is Paramount. There was an instance when one of the MAC student slipped in river while crossing that river with Ladder. Luckily nothing major happened, but its always good to avoid such scenarios.

Last day we had a test on this.  You get to practice both belaying as well as climbing. It snowed two to three days while we were practicing. On the test day, my iceaxe strap cut in the middle of my climb and I was hanging in between, post that, I had to climb again.

We had a crevasse rescue session on the last day after test. It snowed well on that day, we enjoyed our last few moments and we were back to camp. I absorbed as much mountains as possible while I was there.

Next few days went in blur with same routine. We started out trek back towards Mago next day. We directly reached Mago from Meerathang and next day we started back towards New Melling. I enjoyed this stretch while coming back more than when we went up.
