Darling Venom by Parker S. Huntington

Title: Darling Venom

Author:  Parker S. Huntington

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟1/2

Type: Standalone

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Primary Characters: Tate Marchetti, Charlotte Richards

Narration: Dual POV

I went into this book pretty blind. I read bits of the synopsis so I knew the gist of what I was getting into, but not really. I picked it mostly because of author. I had read her last book and loved the vocabulary and thought this book might also be good in that. It definitely didn’t disappoint me in terms of vocabulary.

Plot starts exactly as its described in blurb. When a tragic event pushes Charlotte into depression, in one weak moment she considers suicide. When she is on roof top, she meets the school freak “Kellan Marchetti”. On the verge of ending their lives a unique friendship is formed. They try to check on each other every year same day. on 4th year when charlotte is late to their meeting, Kellan makes a decision to end his life.

Actual plot begins four years post this. Charlotte still feels sort of responsible for several things which occurred on that ugly night. When she meets Kellan’s step brother and sworn enemy Tate things take an ugly turn. Grumpy Gynecologist Tate has his own daemons.  Struggling with balancing his job fresh out of med school, his alcoholic addict father and a rebellious younger step -brother is not easy for him. Tate also feels responsible for his younger brother’s decision.

Their story is so profoundly emotionally intimate and incredibly tender. Guilt is the emotion that absorbs all. Most of the time it’s unwarranted and even when it isn’t it does nothing for anyone. Nothing but make you feel worthless.  I liked how it is explained in this book. I loved that it’s also more about grief, forgiveness, looking into ourselves. It also focuses on hope, healing and growth. Every character is beautiful- unique, fragile, dynamic, and powerful in their own way.

Plot was ok ok. Writing style and vocab is fantastic. I didn’t like the romance part. It felt more about a journey of two people brought together by a tragic death and dealing with the after-effects. I loved some of the secondary characters. Some character development is beautiful.

Overall, the story is more about hope, redemption, forgiveness and growth. If you are fan of book which deal mostly with rollercoaster of emotions then go ahead and pick it.

My first love ended in tragedy.
My second began with his brother.

From Wall Street Journal bestseller Parker S. Huntington comes a broken love story laced with angst and forbidden romance.

I wasn’t supposed to be on that roof on Valentine’s Day.

Neither was Kellan Marchetti, the school’s designated freak.

We met on the verge of ending our lives.

Somehow, the tattered strings of our tragedies tangled and tightened into an unlikely bond.

We decided not to take the plunge and agreed to check on each other every Valentine’s Day until school ended.

Same time.

One roof.

Two restless souls.

We kept our promise for three years.

On the fourth, Kellan made a decision, and I was left to deal with the consequences.

Just when I thought our story ended, another one began.

They say all love stories look the same and taste different.

Mine was venomous, disgraceful, and written in scarlet scars.

My name is Charlotte Richards, but you can call me Venom.
