Soul of the Sword (Shadow of the Fox #2)

Title: Soul of the Sword (Shadow of the Fox #2)

Author: Julie Kagawa

My Rating:  🌟🌟🌟🌟

Type: Series – Book 2

Genre: High Fantasy, Magical World, YA fantasy, Japanese Folklore

Primary Characters: Yumeko, Tatsumi, Daisuke, Okame

 Narration: Dual POV

I thoroughly enjoyed the book 1 and had high hopes for book2. I wanted to continue journey with Yumeko and Tatsumi. It wasn’t that enjoyable to me as much as book1. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like the book. Main reason I didn’t enjoy this book is because of the missing dynamics between Kage Tatsumi and Yumeko. This review might contain spoilers from book1. I suggest reading book1 before reading this review.

The story begins immediately after the explosive ending of the first book1. Yumeko is tasked to bring a piece of the dragon scroll to the Steel Feather Temple and she acquires a few companions on the way who later become her friends. Yumeko, Reika, Okame, Daisuke and master Jiro are on their way to steel feather temple.  At the end of Book1, we know that “Hakaimono” has possessed Kage Tatsumi’s body. In this book, Yumeko along with her duty and journey towards “Steel feather temple” has a strong affinity to track Hakaimono and bring back Kage Tatsumi. Brining back Tatsumi is tougher job than said. I missed Tatsumi and his quietness along with his Yumeko dynamics.

This book had lot of backstory and depth. Development between the characters is deeper and stronger.  I loved this group of Yumeko, Tatsumi, Reika, Okame and Daisuke. We get to see more depth in all characters.  The quest, adventures gave me constant joy. I loved the intricacy and vividness of the characters and plot. There is such an immersive quality in storytelling. The action and adventure scenes in this book were amazing.

The writing is beautiful. The pacing was off in this one, it didn’t flow as nicely and had a couple slow spots. I felt it did have some of unnecessary descriptions and scenes which made the book dull at some moments. The ending was wonderful with a massive cliffhanger.

I really, really liked diving deeper into Yumeko’s story, and watching the series of events unfold. It was very entertaining to see how the story continued. overall, I was engaged and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all ends!
